TM needs RM300,000 to prepare athletes for 2018 Asian Games
KUALA LUMPUR: Taekwondo Malaysia (TM) technical chairman Dhanaraj Rassiah said they need at least RM300,000 to prepare their athletes for the 2018 Asian Games in Indonesia this August.
"We need funding to pay the allowance of athletes and the salary of coaches. TM will organise the Taekwondo G1 tournament to raise funds," he told reporters after a meeting with the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) Selection Committee here, today.
Since early January, the allowance of athletes stopped coming after the removal of taekwondo from the list of 19 core sports by the National Sports Council (NSC).
Last year TM allocated RM250,000 for the SEA Games.
Dhanaraj said the OCM Selection Committee had urged TM to list more athletes to the Asian Games.
"At the meeting, we listed four athletes for poomsae and seven athletes for kerugi events but after discussion, we agreed to add three more athletes for kerugi and two more for poomsae events."
Asked about TM's targets at the Asiad, he said the Asian Games standard was very high unlike the SEA Games, and as such the gold medal was beyond their reach. — Bernama
